Integrated IT is Essential in Maintenance Emergencies
 
Owners/operators of capital equipment should periodically ask themselves, “Does our IT system help us respond to maintenance emergencies?” 

Southwest Airlines (SWA) Flight 812 is an example of a serious situation that could not have been anticipated. Since real emergencies are unpredictable, it’s hard to know which pieces of information will be needed to resolve one. To prepare for the unexpected, it’s important that reliable maintenance and parts data is always available.

The Heart of Equipment Reliability

Oracle hosted a Customer Showcase and Maintenance Summit that offered a laser-like focus on equipment reliability. Almost every speaker mentioned the importance of having accurate (reliable) data within the EAM system, both in terms of parts inventory and maintenance plans.
 
One company said they manage over 100,000 assets in EAM but that the parts lists/bill-of-materials (BOM) is only 50% accurate. It’s hard to plan and deliver fast, reliable maintenance when 50% of your data is wrong.

Japan Disasters May Affect Automotive Aftermarket

It’s well-known that the Japan earthquake and ensuing tsunami and nuclear reactor disasters have impacted the manufacturing, distribution and supply of new cars; what remains to be seen is how it might affect the supply chain for aftermarket parts.
