The High Cost of Downtime
For companies that rely on complex, capital equipment to generate revenue, it's critical to keep that equipment up and running. And sometimes when equipment fails, the costs are much more than economic; A prime example of this truth is the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, given the loss of human life, and the catastrophic environmental and economic costs resulting from the disaster.
Whether the disaster could have been prevented or not is for the experts to determine. But one thing is for sure; BP is facing some monstrous financial losses as a result. Even without the cleanup costs, BP is currently losing huge sums of money because the assets the rig was sent to find are literally floating away.
There is the opportunity cost, in terms of lost drilling time to find new oil deposits, assuming another rig can't be found to continue operations. And then there is the replacement cost, which will exceed the original cost of $350M. (It should be noted that BP didn't own Deepwater Horizon but was leasing it from Transocean.)

New Information on InService Revision Manager
To optimize maintenance and parts management processes, airlines and other capital equipment operators often customize maintenance manuals and parts catalogs. To automate the process of reviewing and integrating OEM updates, Enigma has created the Enigma 3C InService Revision Manager solution.
This application turns a labor-intensive task measured in weeks or months into an automated procedure often completed in hours or days. With support for XML/SGML (including built-in support for industry standard schemas), PDF and graphics/binary files, Revision Manager frees maintenance engineers from tedious document comparisons, allowing them to spend more time on value-add activities like assessing the impact of OEM changes and making necessary engineering decisions.
